How to Install the Backup Server

Introduction

We never hope for a hardware failure. But we should always plan for one. But someday, it is possible that the server (or a critical component of the server) will fail. If you have wisely followed the counsel about Server Redundancy, you will have a backup server ready to use in case of an emergency. This will minimise your downtime.

What you need:

Installing the Backup Server

  1. Carefully disconnect all cables from the old server
    • Power, monitor, mouse, keyboard, backup drive
  2. Carefully connect the same cables to the “new” server
  3. Turn on the machine and log in
    • The username and password should be the same as on the old server
  4. Open the IDTM-Library folder.
  5. Plug in the USB backup drive and navigate to the most recent backup.
  6. Copy the folder containing the most recent date. Paste this into the IDTM-Library folder on the new server.

Updating Client Computers

You may need to update the network drive connections for the server on each client computer if the IP address is different on the new server. Follow this guide How to Connect a Network Drive.
